Degenerative Disc Disease – Treatment Options

Low Back Pain

Here at Functional Wellness Center in Scottsdale Arizona we commonly see patients that come into our office looking for treatments related to a diagnosis that they have been given called Degenerative Disc Disease.

This diagnosis is given when a person has degeneration of the spinal discs at one or multiple levels as a result of some sort of trauma, long term lack of movement, or chronic misalignment of the spine in a particular area such as neck, mid back, or low back. When the diagnosis of Degenerative Disc Disease is given, it is almost always associated with some sort of spinal pain or discomfort.

These pains can be local in nature or may radiate to other parts of the body such as pain going down the arms and into the hands or pain going down the legs and into the feet. When radiating pain exists it is indicative of a more severe problem caused by the degeneration of the spinal discs. When people have been diagnosed with DDD they often wonder what caused this condition and what can be done to help alleviate the pain or discomfort that they are experiencing.

Let’s talk about some of the issues that will result in the spinal discs degenerating and how we can treat them. First let’s talk about what the causes are.

Causes of Degenerative Disc Disease

1. Trauma

When we experience trauma such as a bad fall, car accident, or micro traumas such as bad posture or ergonomics at work or home they can cause our spines to become misaligned and inflamed which will put a lot of pressure on the discs in that particular area of the spine resulting in the discs degenerating at a rapid rate. When the discs start to degenerate it leads to increased sometime pinching of the nerves that exit the spine in those areas resulting in pain and discomfort for that person. The bad thing is that once this process is set into place it will keep getting worse until the underlying issue is addressed and the proper treatment is given.

2. Chronic Misalignment of the Spine

If not treated and checked on a regular bases your spine can become chronically misaligned or subluxated. When your spine is subluxated it causes restrictions to the joints in that area which causes the discs to degenerate at an accelerated pace thus causing long term damage which will results in some sort of pain, sometimes local sometimes radiating into the extremities.

3. Toxins

When your body is exposed to toxins that cause inflammation it will put extra stress on your entire body and if you already have problems with your discs these toxins will make them much worse. The common inflamers of the body are things like increased refined sugar intake, eating processed foods, and high carbohydrate diets. It all goes back to the saying; you are what you eat. When you don’t provide your body with the proper things that it needs to heal and operate properly you will have chronic problems, some of which will be spinal related.

Now that we have covered some of the causes of Degenerative Disc Disease let’s discuss some things that can be done to help treat and stop the progression of this spinal related condition.

Treatment

Have your spine evaluated by someone that specializes in these conditions like we do at the Functional Wellness Center in Scottsdale Arizona or find a great chiropractor in your local area. This doctor will be able to properly analyze and give you the optimal treatment plan that will help to stop the progression of this disease and allow the body to function at its optimal level.

Here at the Functional Wellness Center, we specialize in a technique called Chiropractic Biophysics or CBP for short. We utilize specialized spinal traction techniques that give us the opportunity to help our patients remold the curvatures of their spine into the proper position which can and will eliminate the progression of any disc degenerative disease that someone may have. We also give you the proper tools that help ensure that other areas of your spine will not succumb to the same fate as the area that has already been diagnosed. But this treatment is not for everyone. Some people just want the pain to be diminished and are not concerned about taking care of the underlying issue. For those type of people there are options.

For people that wish to only treat the symptoms, there are many different things that you can do. Many people like to start off by taking over the counter medications like Tylenol or Advil. These medications will help for the short term and may decrease the persons symptoms but they are not intended for long term use because of the problems they can cause the liver, stomach, and kidneys so they should only be used for short periods at a time.

Another treatment is to have a corticosteroid injection. When done properly these injections can help alleviate the symptoms for a longer period of time but again long-term use is not recommended.
