Non-Surgical Approach to Scoliosis Treatment

Non-Surgical Approach to Scoliosis Treatment

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition that affects the alignment of the spine. The spine is supposed to be straight, but if you have scoliosis, it will curve to the side. This can happen in any part of the spine, but most often, it occurs in the lower back.
Scoliosis can occur in people of any age, but it is most common in adolescents. It is more common in girls than boys. In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown. However, there are some rare cases where scoliosis is caused by a genetic disorder or neuromuscular condition. It can also be caused by someone having a short leg on one side.

What are the symptoms of scoliosis?

The most common symptom of scoliosis is a curved spine. The degree of the curve can vary, and it may be mild or severe. In some cases, the curve may be so severe that it affects the way the person walks or stands. You will see these differences as a person ages and their spine starts to collapse on itself. That’s why the doctors at the Functional Wellness Center in Scottsdale Arizona are certified in the technique called Chiropractic Biophysics. This advanced knowledge of how to properly treat someone with scoliosis allows the doctors to use spinal traction that is patient specific to work on correcting the patient’s scoliosis thus giving them lifelong correction. Another symptom that is commonly associated with scoliosis is decreased lung function. As the body starts to collapse on itself from the scoliosis it will compress the lungs, which will cause difficulty breathing, and it puts a ton of pressure on your heart which will lead to decreased energy and possible heart problems.

Other symptoms of scoliosis include:

  • A visibly curved spine
  • Leaning to one side
  • Uneven shoulders
  • One shoulder or hip sticking out
  • Ribs sticking out on one side
  • Clothes are ill-fitting
  • Changes in gait
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Back pains
  • Potential cardiovascular issues

How is scoliosis diagnosed?

Scoliosis is diagnosed by a physical exam and x-rays. Your doctor will look at the x-rays of your entire spine to see if it is curved. He or she will also check to see if your posture is altered in any way. At the Functional Wellness Center in Scottsdale Arizona, we also have advanced software that will analyze your x-rays and give you the exact measurements to determine the severity of our scoliosis and the proper treatment plan needed to give you the best possible care for your condition.

How is scoliosis treated?

In most cases, the curve is mild and will continue to get worse over time. However, the sooner you get the right treatment the better results you may achieve. Treatment for scoliosis may require wearing a personalized back brace. The goal of the brace is to stop the curve from getting worse and put your spine in the proper position. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct the curve but we do everything possible for that not to be the case, which is rarely when treated correctly. Chiropractic care is also an effective treatment option for scoliosis. At the Functional Wellness Center, we use a variety of chiropractic techniques to treat scoliosis, including spinal traction for posture correction, spinal manipulation, and mirror-image exercises. We will provide you with the best equipment to allow you to obtain the optimal correction which provides permanent results.

If you have scoliosis and are in extreme pain some medical doctors will want to manage your pain with powerful medications. These medications can become addicting and will cause major organ damage when used long term. They will typically cause severe liver and kidney damage that leads to many other problems in your body.

Scoliosis and posture correction are two important issues that Chiropractic care can address. Chiropractic is a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that focuses on the musculoskeletal system. This natural approach can help to improve posture and alleviate the symptoms of scoliosis.
