Stomach Sensitivity and Gut Health

Stomach Sensitivity and Gut Health | Chiropractor in Scottsdale AZ
A common question we get in Scottsdale is how to naturally stop digestive issues like gut health and stomach sensitivity. When we say digestive issues we are referring to your complete digestive system from the top down. Our Scottsdale chiropractor can help you overcome it.

What causes intestinal disease?

There are many different things that can cause chronic digestive issues. Most people with any type of digestive sensitivity have been self medicating with things that alter the digestive process from the top down like antacids (Tums), Proton pump inhibitors (Nexium, Prilosec, Ect.)

These medications will provide temporary relief but long term use can have harmful effects on the body. The unfortunate part of taking these types of medications is that people are just trying to get rid of the pain and discomfort instead of taking a step back and seeing why these digestive issues are happening in the first place.

People don’t just wake up one day with heartburn or indigestion it is a process that can take some time to develop to the point of discomfort.

Because of the lifestyles that many people choose to live in today’s society digestive issues are extremely common. People are always on the go between work and kids and trying to keep up with the Jones’s.

When this happens peoples tendencies tend to go to quick and easy, and what’s quick and easy when it comes to your diet is premade box meals, fast food, coffee, energy drinks, and foods that contain horrible chemicals that your body cannot handle properly. We’ll talk about some of these things is a bit but let’s start with one thing we can all relate to, which is stress and we’ll go from there.

1. Stress

Having a lot of stress in your life as we all know never turns out well. When we are continually stressed we tend to feel those burning pits in our stomach, which is actually your body producing extra Costisol (stress hormone), Adrenaline (fight or flight hormone) to get ready to take on whatever stressful situation you may be facing.

When this happens the chemicals that are in your stomach such as pepsin, hydrochloric acid, and other gastric juices tend to cause feelings of upset stomach, burning in the stomach, and problems with mental clarity. When these stress levels start becoming more consistent and your body’s new normal, especially your digestion will suffer. In return this stress can cause an increase in anxiety and depression as well.

The reason this can happen is because the chemicals dopamine and serotonin which help to regulate many bodily functions and have a big affect on mood are altered. When these hormone levels are altered in the body they will cause more stress, increasing your anxiety and depression levels. All this stress will lead to poor sleep and plummet your energy levels. Can you see how this is all a chain effect? One thing leads to another and so on.

2. Food

What you are fueling your body with is one of the most important keys to healing your gut. Food can cause stress levels to rise if you are not eating a healthy diet. So before we talk about what is healthy let’s talk about what is unhealthy and causes destruction to your gut and health.

Many foods cause gut inflammation such as sugar, oils, gluten, fast food, processed and boxed foods and fried foods. Depending on your personal sensitivity all these foods have a negative effect on the gut and on healthy stomach flora and bacteria. How your gut works is the gut has healthy bacteria and flora that aid in digestion and breaking down of food so your body can use the food for fuel.

But, if you are eating these unhealthy foods that have chemicals and no nutritional value it is inflaming your gut and ruining all the good healthy bacteria and flora so your body is now unable to digests your food and this leads to major problems. Some of the most common we see at Functional Wellness Center are heartburn and leaky gut.

Both of these symptoms are major reactions by your body to harmful chemicals and foods that you intake with a poor diet. So you might be thinking what foods can I eat because most of my current diet consists of poor quality foods. We like to have people eat food that does not come in a box or a tray that you have to stick in the microwave or oven.

These foods consist of Lean grass feed organic meats, wild caught seafood, and organically grown fruits and vegetables. At least 80% of your diet needs to consist of these foods, we all understand that Pizza has to be in there every once in a while. We are not saying you can’t treat yourself occasionally but the more you clean up your diet the more you will realize the harmful effects processed sugary foods have on your body.

3. Medications

This can be a sensitive subject because most people don’t want to admit that they have to take multiple pills a day because of severe symptoms that are experiencing such as heartburn, low energy, anxiety, depression, etc.

I can guarantee you your migraine headache is not being caused because your body lacks Excedrin. I could go on and on with these types of analogies but we want people to realize is that every medication you take into your body causes different reactions and effects. People like to call them side effects because it makes them sound better but they are not side effects, they are direct effects.

They all have to processed by your digestive system, and then filtered through your liver and kidneys. This is why you eventually have problems in all three areas when taking any type of medication long term. Long term medication use especially acid reducing drugs and antibiotics destroys your gut flora and stomach lining which leads to malabsorption in the body.

4. Spine

When you look into your health you must realize that the spine is the window to your overall health. If any spinal distortions or misalignments are present they will cause nerve flow to become compromised in that specific area.

As everyone knows the Brain controls all of the functions of the body by sending signals down the spinal cord, out of the nerves, to all the organs and tissues in the body. If these organs don’t get the proper signals from the brain they will eventually weaken and degenerate over time.

If the nerves that run the gut (stomach, intestines, gall bladder, etc) are compromised in any way this will lead to organs and whole systems (digestive) not being able to run properly causing dis-ease in the body. So your posture and spinal health play a pivotal role in your health especially the gut.

So now I’m sure you’re wondering what can be done? First I want you to realize that it’s usually not just one thing that you are experiencing. It is usually because of multiple factors, many of which I have listed above.

Here in Scottsdale Arizona we are extremely lucky to have many different resources available to us to help with healing the entire body not just chasing symptoms.

If you want to try a few easy things for temporary relief while seeking out further help, here are a few suggestions: For heart burn or any other upper digestive issue use a tea spoon of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar in a 3 ounces of water before eating a meal to help prepare your stomachs proper PH and allow for easier digestion. For upset stomachs have some different teas on hand such as Peppermint, Ginger, and Chamomile.

A lot of times if you look companies have made tea bags that contain things like I just mentioned specially for upset stomachs. Another quick tip is to get some peppermint essential oil and rub a few drops on your stomach for temporary relief.
